A manufacturer that happens to make buildings
We are closer to a vehicle plant than a construction company, and that is deliberate. The discipline that makes modular work is production engineering, not site management.
How we got here
Thornedge started in 2009 in a single unit in Scunthorpe, building classroom blocks for two local authorities who had run out of ways to add capacity over a summer holiday. Education is still about forty per cent of what we make.
Wigan opened in 2018 for repeat residential work, which needs a different kind of line: the same module hundreds of times rather than a handful of one-offs. Newport followed in 2023 to serve South Wales and the M4 corridor and to take the bespoke work that a dedicated line handles badly.
What we are not
We are not a hire company and we do not do temporary accommodation. Everything we make is designed for a 40 or 60 year life and connected to permanent services. If you need a cabin for eight months, there are better firms to ring and we will name one.
Working here
451 people across three plants, most of them time-served in trades that used to be site-based. The pitch we make to a joiner or an electrician is simple: indoors, same site every day, no travelling, and home for tea. It is why our turnover is a third of the construction average.
